Dance Off with the Star Wars Stars 2009

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 7:07 PM

This was actually amazing… Darth Vader doing MC Hammer, Stormtrooper doing the ‘neck dance’ for What Is Love… Gotta watch this.

He is, indeed, a demon on wheels.

Anyone who thinks that Speed Racer (2008) utterly sucks, let me know so I can remove you from my f-list.

Halfway thru ANOTHER DVD viewing, and I am still CONSISTENTLY impressed by story ideas, sfx, and occasional acting.

This movie (like Popeye and Flash Gordon) is better than you snarkily think it is.

I don't know if it has the culty glow of Big Trouble in Little China or Hudson Hawk to it as of yet.

But it is good. At least, to me.

One of my greatest regrets is never meeting John M. Ford in the flesh.

One of my greatest blessings is to have interacted, oft-times regularly, with John M. Ford on the Pyramid messageboards and in email.

God grant I am half the writer Mike was, and I will be happy.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
I saw it last night. Abby Jen and I went to the 10:30 pm show to avoid the small children. I mean who brings a six year old to a 10:30 pm show? WHO?!? I mean that would be crazy to bring your small, talkative child to a movie that ends at 1 am. CRAZY! Only a really bad parent would do something like that. Right? I mean child services can take children away for less! So no one in their right mind would do something like that.

But they did.

And he talked the entire time.

Yes, the ENTIRE TIME! No gross exaggerations here.

Too bad too. The movie was the best in the series and I would have really liked to have enjoyed it more. The look of the film was stunning. A big round of applause to all involved in that aspect of the film. The films finally got to a point in the story where Harry gets to do stuff as opposed to standing around being told he's a very special boy. Plus he shoots Malfoy in the face!

Here's hoping the remaining films are as good.

Your political compass at politicalcompass.org

Economic Left/Right: -7.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.69

Yep, I'm a flaming liberal. :p

This is actually a neat side because it explains the meaning of the spectrum and the need to do a 2D graph, and THEN gives you your results.

Trailer for "Moon"

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Been hearing some phenomenal reviews about the new indie film, "Moon" (Rotten Tomatoes gives it 90%), starring Sam Rockwell and directed by Duncan Jones (who also happens to be David Bowie's son).

"It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth's primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive.

Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of "Sarang," the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond "Gerty," the base's well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer.

Suddenly, Sam's health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago."

Has anyone seen this yet?

Well That Sucks

Dropped my phone today and the screen cracked. It's still useable, but ugh. Luckily I qualify for an upgrade so it looks like there's an iPhone GS in my future.

"Okay, space badger ... eat the space crystal ... EAT IT!"
"?"

It's amazing some of the things that you end up saying during the course of a roleplaying session. WHY we were talking about a "space badger" and forcing it to eat crystals ... well ... that really isn't much of a story ... just natural digression during play. But the mental image of that badger ... now THAT'S funny to me!

Mortal Coil Revised: A Clarification

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 11:32 AM
At DexCon last week, I had two people approach me on two separate occasions and ask me the same question about Mortal Coil Revised.

"I heard that magic no longer has a price in Mortal Coil Revised. Is that true?"

Both people were, rightfully, dismayed that this might be the case. The answer is, no, it is not true. The way magic works in Revised is unchanged. Price, as these two players mentioned, is one of their favorite parts of the system, and it is mine, too.

Since two different gamers asked me this same question on two different occasions, I was concerned. It seemed that a rumor about this change was starting to circulate, and I wanted to get to the bottom of it. A short bit of investigation led me to the source of the rumor: a blog post by Rob Donoghue about the Revised edition. A careful read of this blog will show that Rob is not saying that magic has no price in Revised. He is, in fact, talking about a different rule, the threshold of credibility rule. A quick skim of the post, however, is leading people to draw an incorrect conclusion, and rereading the post I could see how a reader might interpret the post as saying that magic no longer has a price.

I hope this post helps clear the air on the issue!
